4 Steps to Freedom from SabotagingInner Child Memories (For Eating Disorder Sufferers)
Posted August 24, 2009
By Kathleen Fuller, Ph.D.
This was a favorite poem describing the childhood spirit for Buckminister Fuller, a truly creative man of the 20th century. It sets the tone and the bar to reach for the wonder that can be experienced when you clear the past sabotagingInner Child memories. Free yourself from the wounds of your childhood and free yourself from your eating disorder or other negative behaviors.
The greatest poem ever known Is one all poets have outgrown: The poetry, innate, untold Of being only four years old.
Still young enough to be a part Of Nature’s great impulsive heart, Born comrade of bird, beast, & tree And unselfconscious as the bee....
And yet with lovely reason skilled Each day, new paradise to build Elate explorer of each sense, Without dismay, without pretense!
In your unstrained transparent eyes There is no conscience, no surprise: Life’s queer conundrums you accept, Your strange Divinity still kept….
And life, that sets all things in rhyme, May make you poet, too, in time..... But there were days, O tender elf, When you were Poetry itself!
.....Christopher Morley

Look for old photos of you as a small child. Ask family members.
Next look deeply into your photo eyes and ask yourself to be aware of what you felt at that moment in your life. Make yourself safe in a private uninterrupted place to do this exercise.
Grab your journal or go buy one. Put today’s date and note how old you were (you can guess if you don’t know exactly) and write whatever you remember using feeling words. Easy feeling words to use are angry, scared, sad, and happy. Also ask yourself what was going on around you, in your family, and in your environment at the age you were in the above photo. Again make notes in your journal.
Ask for support from a friend that agrees to support you by not advising you but agreeing to be a good listener for you in this process as needed.
I included the following poem which clearly conveys the feelings you might have if you grew up as a sensitive child in an unhealthy or chaotic home environment. Remember there is always another step in becoming free, especially from a toxic eating disorder or eating issue.
